THE 2023 CRESTRON HOME TECHNOLOGY AWARD WINNERS
Ten projects using Crestron solutions that are truly “best in class”
December 1

In September — during the 2023 CEDIA® Expo tradeshow — we announced the winners of this year’s Crestron Home Technology Awards. Ten firms were honored for their work in nine categories. Since the announcement, we’ve been gathering info on these amazing projects, and here are all the details.

The winners are:

Ultimate Crestron Home:

Ultimate Multi-Dwelling Unit: One Thousand Museum by AHT Global

Best Design Meets Technology: Camping Out by Quality Audio Video

Best Entertainment Everywhere Solution: Jones Residence by Pacific Audio & Communication

Health & Wellness Home of the Year: The Viscardi Center by Path Audio Visual

Best Integration Utilizing Crestron Partners/Extensions: Meta Residence by Think Simple

Best Shading Application: Kowalchuk by Future Technologies

Best Lighting Application: Fort Myers Residence by Phil’s Phancy Programming

Best Showroom/Demo Space: Haas Showroom by Haas Home Technology

Ultimate Crestron Home

Project: Stoneledge
Integrator: Enhanced Home

Alpesh Patel, the founder of the firm behind this masterpiece, really does take his work home with him: Stoneledge is both his family’s residence and a showroom that demonstrates the true scope and potential of a complete Crestron system. Patel actually “walks the walk” — he’s able to demo the very solutions he recommends to customers as they’re in use in his own home. “Crestron technology has helped us achieve our goal of creating unique spaces that you can actually use,” says Patel.

The solutions in those spaces include automated lighting, shading, HVAC, distributed audio and video, touch screen control, and more — all powered by Crestron technology. The home isn’t a “set it and forget it” showplace, either, according to Cortney Combs, the design and client relations specialist for Enhanced Home. “In the first year following the home build, we changed the custom system to Crestron Home,” says Combs. This has been a game changer for Enhanced Home, as it has made the system more approachable and easily scalable to homes of any size.”

Ultimate Crestron Home

Project: Tenenbaum Residence
Integrator: Bliss HTA

Ready for a party? One of the most often-used scenes programmed into this home’s automation system can entertain thousands of guests — yes, thousands — with the push of a single button. Acting as a kind of “electronic butler,” triggering the “Entertain” mode orchestrates a synchronized sequence complete with lighting, shading, music, water elements, and even fire features. Every detail’s accounted for, including customized screen savers for the home’s displays and automatic temperature control to keep the partygoers comfortable.

More sedate functions include a daily routine that automatically adjusts lighting and shading in the morning hours and transitions into bedtime mode at 11:00 p.m. nightly. The scale of the project is notable, including 16 video zones, 11 HVAC zones, six patio heaters, control for two pools, and a dedicated home cinema. The project also includes a showroom purpose-built for the client’s luxury car collection.

Ultimate Multi-Dwelling Unit

Project: One Thousand Museum
Integrator: AHT Global

Creating the right MDU solution has its own set of unique challenges: Can the home automation be repeatable and scalable? Is there room for customization among the individual residences? And what kind of solutions are right for the common areas? There’s another challenge particular to this project: A system that provides the kind of luxury expressed by the building itself. One Thousand Museum is the late architect Zaha Hadid’s only residential skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.

AHT Global turned to Crestron for a base package that offered audio, lighting, HVAC, window treatments, and security solutions powered by the Crestron Home® OS. Individual owners of the units (ranging in size from 4,600 to 10,000 square feet) can customize the package with the addition of DM NVX® AV-over-IP technology, for example. AHT Global Project Manager Doug Hirsch notes, “Crestron Home gives us the ability to control just about everything. It’s extremely broad in its scope, and the quality of the product itself is so incredibly high.”

Best Design Meets Technology

Project: Camping Out
Integrator: Quality Audio Video

The winner of the “Design Meets Technology” category achieves just what the name implies: It’s a home whose contemporary lines are never compromised by the smart solutions within. Technology is front and center where it needs to be — in this case, the dedicated home cinema and golf simulator — and completely unobtrusive elsewhere in the project. This was no small undertaking, according to the CEO of Quality Audio Video, Tyson Rabani: “Our situation was unique as our firm did not have the opportunity to prewire or design the system.” Rabani further notes that deploying the latest Crestron Home® OS solution was a huge help in this regard.

An excellent example of that is the distributed audio system: Utilizing Crestron DM NAX™ audio-over-IP technology meant minimal cabling in this retrofit. The homeowner sums up just why this project won the category: “We fell in love with this home’s interior design and architecture. We are blown away with the Crestron system that supports the design of the home rather than take away from it.”

Best Entertainment Everywhere Solution

Project: Jones Residence
Integrator: Pacific Audio & Communication Hawaii

Tucked into the hills on the Hawaiian island of Maui, this luxurious retreat is all about the water features, including an infinity-edged elevated pool that feeds into a lower level, a jacuzzi, a grotto with a waterslide, and a waterfall feature in the courtyard of the estate. In addition to distributed AV and other systems throughout this massive property, Pacific Audio & Communications needed to add three separate pool controls and dramatic lighting to the water features.

The best solution for this retrofit came in the form of a hybrid Crestron system, which merged Crestron SIMPL programming software and the Crestron Home® OS. The result is an integration that’s programmed to run a broad variety of subsystems while giving the homeowner the power to quickly customize and adapt the control system to his liking. In fact, client Greg Jones notes, “I can now live independently at a level I never imagined.”

Health & Wellness Home of the Year

Project: The Independent Living House at the Viscardi Center
Integrator: Path Audio Visual

The Independent Living House embodies the mission of the nonprofit Viscardi Center: It’s designed to help high-school-age children with disabilities gain independent living skills, spending overnight time away from their homes in a supervised atmosphere. This is where assistive technology comes in, with Crestron systems helping with communications, lighting and shading, entertainment, and more.

The house sleeps six, with each room featuring a Crestron touch screen, a hand-held remote, and voice control to manage the technology in the space. VUI handles the Crestron lights, shades, thermostats, AV, and the TV lifts in both the individual quarters and the common areas. Displays are motorized to move and pivot for wheelchair accessibility — which is especially helpful if a student is streaming a video on meal prep in the kitchen, for example. “These enhancements to the space have made it possible for every individual to easily control their environment, which was the exceptional result we were going for,” says Michael Russo, CEO of Path Audio Visual.

Best Integration Utilizing Partners

Project: Project: Meta Residence
Integrator: Think Simple

As we previously noted on the Crestron blog, The Meta Residence “is an 11,000-square-foot Miami mansion outfitted with Crestron gear — with a virtual twin in the ‘metaverse.’ Both are for sale as a package, with the digital copy available as an NFT.” The idea was generated by Gabe Sierra, whose firm Sierra Development focuses on luxury projects such as this one in the physical world.

The idea here is that every aspect of the technology in the “real” version of the home is duplicated in its virtual counterpart. This includes everything from distributed audio to a dedicated home theater. We also dug into the “why” in the aforementioned post: “’If I am the CEO of a company, and I buy this house, now I can outfit the metaverse house with my brand.’ Disney, for example, could build a virtual theme park in the metaverse — and perhaps even preview future rides and attractions virtually.”

Best Shading Application

Project: Kowalchuk
Integrator: Future Technologies

North River, New York, is a tiny hamlet near the Gore Mountain Ski Resort, the state’s largest. It’s tucked into the Adirondack Park region of New York, home to six million acres of mountains, rivers, lakes, and woodlands. This region of the Eastern US offers unparalleled views of nature and unspoiled beauty. This home was built with those views in mind, with expansive windows at the back of the home.

Of course, those big expanses of glass need the proper shading, and Crestron’s roller shades give the homeowner precise management of natural light and indoor temperature. The shades vanish into the home’s timber frame structure via Crestron’s ultra-quiet motors when they’re not being used, revealing a spectacular look at the surrounding wilderness. Those shades are just one part of an outstanding integration: “Crestron's comprehensive control, lighting, shading, and audio solutions have brought a new level of convenience and luxury to this Adirondack retreat,” says David Layton, the owner of Future Technologies.

Best Lighting Application

Project: Fort Myers Residence
Integrator: Phil’s Phancy Programming

This 14,000-square-foot waterside oasis came with a special ask: Homeowner Sylvie Acovski has an extensive art collection that’s on display throughout the residence. Those pieces include original paintings, custom-built furniture, and works of glass — in fact, Acovski’s late husband has family ties to The Lalique Glass Art company in France, a firm recognized globally for its luxurious creations.

To help Acovski highlight her collections, Phil Roberts and his team at Phil’s Phancy Programming created a Crestron system that spans 200 tunable lighting zones and motorized shading for the home’s 60-foot glass walls. Controls include beautiful Horizon® keypads programmed for one-touch operation. The result is a stunning presentation that rivals some of the world’s great museums — it’s literally a live-in art gallery.

Best Showroom/Demo Space

Project: Haas Showroom
Integrator: Haas Home Technologies

The team from Haas Home Technologies decided that their showroom should be a true experience center — an “event hub” in the heart of Austin, Texas. The firm set out to create “a local atmosphere where architects, builders, and designers come together to enjoy events that foster innovation and collaboration, shaping the future of luxury residential technology and design,” according to Haas Co-founder Pierre Cloutier.

To that end, Haas enlisted Saavedra Design Studio, Frost Visualizations, Winn Wittman Architecture, and of course, Crestron to realize the perfect environment for everything from client demos to lunch-and-learns with the design/build community. Crestron control is at the heart of the system, with programmed scenes that assist guided tours of the space and demonstrate the incredibly intuitive UI for everything from lighting to music.
